Christmas Favours

Favourpic1At this time of year many of us find our diaries full to bursting with social occasions. Whether that means large scale parties or small family gatherings, it’s a wonderful opportunity to get creative and make Christmas favours to give any guest that comes your way.

As a family we make Festive Favours to place in the centre of the table. Cute little cones that are incredibly quick to make and can be filled with anything you like. I fill mine with after dinner mints, but they’d look just as good filled with sugared almonds or chocolate coins. They’re also simple enough that children can make them and have huge versatility when it comes to design. The only limit is your imagination!

You Will Need:

Card to make the cones

Paper, ribbon, lace and/or ric rac to decorate the cones

Narrow ribbon or string

PVA glue

Tissue paper

Sweets

Step 1

First you need to make a template for the cones. I did this by drawing around a medium sized plate onto packing paper. The template needs to be 1/3 of the total circle, the easiest way to find this is by folding the circle in half and then each half into 3. This will divide the circle into 6 sections and you want to cut out 2 of these sections which equal 1/3 of the circle.

Step 2

Using the new template as a guide, cut out several flat cones from coloured card. I used green card but any colour would work just as well. I managed to cut 3 cones out of an A4 piece of card.

Step 3

Now comes the fun part, decoration! Mine are decorated with handmade paper bought in Venice, but wrapping paper, magazine cut-outs or collages all work beautifully. If your children are helping how about getting them to decorate some paper with festive images or stamps.

Spread a layer of glue over your flat card cones and stick to the paper of your choice. Once dry, cut the shape out again.

Step 4

Take each decorated shape and roll into a cone. The two flat sides should overlap slightly and can be glued or taped together.

Next make a small hole in either side of the cone, this is to attach a ribbon for hanging later. I used a single hole punch, but any sharp object should work..

Step 5

Finally add some finishing touches to the cones, I used lace, ric rac and sequins. Glitter glue looks fabulous, but anything will work.

Then thread a piece of ribbon through the holes on each cone and tie ready for hanging. Place a little tissue paper into the base of each cone to act as a cushion. Fill up with your chosen sweets and they’re ready to go.

I like hanging the cones from a mug tree. I bought this from a local charity shop and painted it green. Then I decorated a tin can with Christmas paper and stuck the mug tree on top. You can even glue Christmas decorations onto the tin, making it into a lovely table centre. Of course you could hang them from anything you can think of. I add more cones as necessary while my guests take their yummy favours home.Favourpic8

Scented Candle Shop – Yankee Candle Review

IMG_5164There’s something about the festive season that makes scented candles, oil burners and reed diffusers extra magical. The correct fragrance can evoke a forgotten childhood memory, remind you of delicious treats or just help to get you into the Christmas spirit. I particularly love spiced fragrances; cinnamon, clove, orange and mulled wine and I eagerly await new scents from Yankee Candle and Ashleigh & Burwood every year.

The Scented Candle Shop recently contacted me to ask if I would like to try out a couple of items from their current range. Once I’d got over the excitement of having some new candles I took a look at their website and was pleased to discover that they stock a large range of brands and also have some really good deals available.

I chose to test out the Christmas Eve Candle and Christmas Cookie candle, both from Yankee Candles and currently available with a 25% discount!

Christmas Eve Candle

This is quite a departure from my usual spiced fragrances but when I tell you a bit more about it you’ll understand the appeal. To put it simply this candle smells very reminiscent of jelly beans!! How is that Christmassy I hear you cry, well in our house Christmas always means an increase in sweets, chocolates and sugar. It’s a whimsical fragrance that can appeal to young and old alike, in fact my kids ask me to light it every day!

The picture on the front of the jar is wonderful and festive and the bright red colour suits December décor perfectly. On a practical note the candle burns evenly and has a great fragrance throw. I wouldn’t say it lingers around the house as long as some Yankee fragrances can but that’s probably a good thing or I’d be raiding the cupboards at 2am.

Christmas Cookie

This is a candle for the bakers or fans of home cooking, to me it smells like the best fresh buttercream. Sweet, buttery and incredibly moreish this candle gave a great fragrance as soon as it was lit.

Make sure you keep the wick trimmed before relighting (as you should with all Yankee candles) or the excess may fall into the cream coloured wax and create a slightly dirty milk appearance. Otherwise the colour and picture on the jar gave this candle an elegant and sophisticated appeal.

The Scented Candle Shop dispatched and delivered my candles in lightning speed and both were very securely packaged and protected. They even came wrapped in delicate tissue paper.

Octonauts Toy Review!

Octonauts Explore, Rescue, Protect! If that motto sounds familiar then chances are you have some Octonauts fans at home. These undersea adventurers are popular with children all over the world and thanks to their new range of toys from Fisher Price they’re bound to feature heavily on Christmas Lists. We were sent a few items from the range to review and today I’m sharing our thoughts.

Deep Sea Octo-Lab

‘The Deep Sea Octo-Lab opens up to reveal two floors of play inside, and comes with air-powered rescue tools for deep sea rescue. Hook up your rescue tools to the hoses, turn the dial on the base to select the tool you’d like to activate, and push down on the pump to shoot a kelp cake, launch a rescue flare, or activate the volcano! The pump also activate lights and sounds that will prompt you through the ultimate deep sea adventure. All pieces store inside. Deep Sea Station Playset includes playset with lights and sounds, Shellington Deep Sea figure, Octo Bot, kelp cake, rescue flare, volcano, lava rocks, and three air power hoses.’

OctolabMy kids were highly anticipating receiving this particular toy but did the reality live up to the hype?

It’s probably safe to say that the air-powered rescue tools are one of the most attractive features of the Octo-Lab. However you have to make sure that the hoses are really well pushed into their holes, otherwise the air-power is somewhat lack lustre. The tools don’t shoot far and wide which I personally think is a bonus as we’ve not lost any of them or accidentally poked anyone in the eye! At the end of this review I’ve included a video to show just how effective they are.

The lights and sound are great fun and the Octo-Lab is actually surprisingly loud. Batteries are required to make this feature work though and they don’t come included in the box.

From a parents point of view I love the fact that everything can fit neatly within the Octo-lab which makes tidying a breeze. From a kids point of view:

Agent G – It was wonderful and great!

Lieutenant I – I love pumping up the hose toys!

Captain N – I like Shellington and the jellyfish and the lights are brilliant!

Gup-DGup D Crab Mode

‘Barnacles, in the GUP-D, is ready to lead the crew on exciting new adventures! On land, the GUP-D’s drill can move and spin for pretend excavation and repair work! For undersea missions, submerge the GUP-D’s drill & press the fin to see the drill spin & squirt water! The rescue claw is perfect for transporting wounded creatures back to safety! Also included is Barnacles in his special deep sea suit and a Blue Crab, too!’

The Gup-D is a lot of fun and a really nice size for my youngest to carry around, I also think it complements the Octo-Lab brilliantly. My favourite feature has to be the ability to use it underwater so the claw can spin, bath-time has never been so exciting in our house!

Agent G – It’s really cool because it has a drill.

Lieutenant I – You can make different Octonauts sit in it and it can go in the bath and it squirts water which is amazing!

Captain N – I love Captain Barnacles and the squirty claw.

 Kwazii Plush

Mini Plush Kwazii

Kwazii is without a doubt the favourite character for my youngest and he was ridiculously happy when he arrived. The plush is well constructed and beautifully soft. Beyond that I can’t tell you much more because Kwazii was snaffled away by Captain N and rarely leaves his side.

Captain N – Kwazii is the best! He’s cool and he’s a pirate and he’s really soft and I love him!

Final Thoughts

All my children have really enjoyed playing with the Octonauts toys and have now requested more, which says it all really!

They appear to be well made and durable. The RRP is quite high in some cases (The Octo-Lab has an RRP of £39.99) however most stores are currently selling it for £19.99-£29.99 which seems more realistic.

Overall I don’t think any Octonauts fan would be disappointed if Santa dropped some of these down the chimney for Christmas.

The Toys in Action

What better way to explain the toys than with a little video showing them in action, enjoy!
